Paul Gruen has been playing and performing for over 30 years and has been teaching music for over 18 years in the North Bay (and also previously in North Carolina). He teaches all levels of students. Instruments and styles include bluegrass and clawhammer banjo; many guitar styles including folk, jazz, gypsy jazz, bluegrass, and rock; and ukulele (regular and baritone). (Ukulele styles include chord-melody, popular, jazz, Hawaiian, and others).

Paul performs professionally. He previously performed with violinist David Laflamme (of “It’s a Beautiful Day”) in a Gypsy jazz ensemble, Bo Django. Paul performed with well-known vocalist, Dan Hicks, at the “Djangofest” at the Throckmorton Theater in Mill Valley . He was educated at the University of California , Los Angeles.

Paul emphasizes learning the proper technique for the particular instrument and style of music being played. He customizes lessons and frequently creates arrangements for songs which students specifically request to learn. His goal is to engage the student in the learning process, while providing the proper fundamentals, so that each student may experience the continual joy that comes with improving his or her musical capabilities.
